In the UAE, family members are sponsored by you as an individual resident, not by your company. Your spouse, children and in some cases your parents attach to your personal residence file, and they do not come out of the visa quota your business holds. This is the single most common misunderstanding among business owners, who assume dependants consume allocation they need for staff.
Sponsorship applications are easy to get wrong on documentation. Our UAE visa services team handles family files daily.
What you need instead is your own completed residence status, a salary meeting the applicable condition, accommodation satisfying the housing requirement, and attested documents proving the relationship.
Who can sponsor whom?
A resident holding a valid residence visa can generally sponsor immediate family. Scrutiny increases as the relationship becomes more distant.
- Spouse. The most straightforward category, subject to an attested marriage certificate and the salary condition. Both husbands and wives can sponsor, though a wife sponsoring a husband is assessed against a higher bar and may need a profession the authority recognises.
- Children. Sons can be sponsored until an age threshold applies, after which they need their own visa. Unmarried daughters have no equivalent cut-off.
- Parents. Possible, but a distinct and considerably stricter category, normally sponsored as a couple rather than individually.
- Other relatives. Siblings, in-laws and extended family are generally not sponsorable. The realistic routes are their own employment visa, a property-linked residence, or a long-term residence category.
Do dependants use up my company’s visa quota?
No. Your company’s quota is the number of employees it may sponsor, assessed against your licence activity and registered premises. Family visas sit on your personal file and count against nothing in the business.
The connection runs the other way. Your ability to sponsor depends on your own residence visa and declared salary, and both come from the company. A shareholder-manager drawing a nominal salary may find the structure constrains the family application — not through quota, but through the salary condition. That should influence how your mainland company or free zone company is set up, including the profession recorded on your visa.
What conditions apply to the sponsor?
Four conditions apply in nearly every case. We state no figures, because they vary by emirate, by who you are sponsoring, and by periodic revision.
Your own residence must be complete
Not applied for, not pending — complete, with your Emirates ID application progressed to the point the authority accepts. You cannot run your application and your family’s in parallel.
A salary condition applies
The level depends on who you are sponsoring, and it is lower for a spouse and children than for parents. It is assessed from your registered employment contract or, for owners, from income evidence the authority accepts. Housing allowance is sometimes counted toward it and sometimes assessed separately.
Suitable accommodation
You must evidence accommodation adequate for the family size, normally a registered tenancy contract or title deed in your own name. A bed space, a room in shared accommodation, or a tenancy in someone else’s name will not satisfy this. Bedroom count matters for larger families.
Attested civil documents
Marriage and birth certificates must be attested through the full chain: authentication in the country of issue, then by the UAE mission there, then UAE-side, with legal translation into Arabic where needed.
What does each dependant type require?
| Dependant | Relationship document | Also required | Practical note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spouse | Attested marriage certificate, translated | Salary condition, tenancy, medical test, Emirates ID | A wife sponsoring a husband faces extra scrutiny |
| Son below the age threshold | Attested birth certificate naming both parents | Salary condition, tenancy, Emirates ID | Must move to another category once the threshold is reached |
| Son above the age threshold | Attested birth certificate | A separate route: student, employment or other | Exceptions exist for sons in full-time education or with disabilities |
| Unmarried daughter | Attested birth certificate | Salary condition, tenancy, Emirates ID | No equivalent cut-off while unmarried |
| Parents | Sponsor’s attested birth certificate and parents’ marriage certificate | Higher salary condition, proof of dependency, insurance, deposit | Usually both together; reassessed at every renewal |
Why is sponsoring parents treated so differently?
Because the authority treats a parent as a long-term financial liability rather than part of a nuclear household, and prices the risk accordingly.
In practice: a materially higher salary condition than for a spouse and children, evidence that the parents genuinely depend on you financially, mandatory medical insurance, and a refundable security deposit against the file. Both parents are usually expected to come together, on the reasoning that sponsoring one leaves the other unsupported.
It is also reassessed at each renewal rather than rolling forward: if your salary falls or your accommodation changes, a renewal can fail even though the original succeeded.
What commonly goes wrong
Unattested or partly attested certificates
By far the most common cause of rejection. Attestation is a chain and each link must be completed in order, starting in the issuing country. People routinely arrive with a certificate authenticated by their home country’s foreign ministry and assume that suffices — it does not, without the UAE mission step and UAE-side authentication. Start before you relocate; completing the chain remotely sometimes requires a trip back.
Accommodation that does not meet the requirement
Sponsors apply on the strength of a tenancy that cannot support a family application: a studio for a family with children, a tenancy in a spouse’s or employer’s name, or a contract never registered with the emirate’s system. It must be in the sponsor’s own name, registered, and proportionate to the household.
Applying before your own residence is complete
Sponsors file for the family while their own visa is still in process, hoping to compress the timeline. It does not work: the dependant application is validated against a live sponsor record. The correct order is licence, then your own residence, then dependants.
Name mismatches
If names are spelled or ordered differently across a passport, a marriage certificate and a birth certificate, the relationship cannot be verified. Fix it with an attested affidavit before filing.
Assuming the salary condition is met
What counts is the figure on your registered contract, not your total earnings or dividends. Owner-managers frequently find their registered salary was set low for other reasons and will not support a family application. Changing it means amending a registered contract.
What drives the cost of family sponsorship
The total varies and we will not guess at it. The drivers:
- How many dependants, and in which categories
- Whether parents are included, since deposits and insurance apply to them
- Your emirate of residence, as housing and insurance requirements differ
- Whether each dependant enters from abroad or changes status in-country
- How much attestation and legal translation is still outstanding
If you are still planning the company behind all of this, the UAE business setup calculator gives an indicative figure for the licence and the visas attached to it — the foundation a family application rests on.
Common questions
Can my company sponsor my wife and children instead of me?
No. Dependants are sponsored by the individual resident and the company is not a party to the application. Its only role is to be the source of your residence visa and registered salary.
Can my spouse work on a visa I sponsored?
Yes, with a work permit obtained by the employer. The residence visa stays sponsored by you and the employer applies separately for permission to work.
What happens when my son reaches the age threshold?
He must move to a different category, typically a student visa if in full-time education or an employment visa if working. Plan it in advance — a lapse in status is far harder to fix than a planned switch.
Do dependants need medical tests and Emirates IDs?
Adults do, and children above a certain age do. All dependants are registered for Emirates ID regardless of age, as it is their identity document for schooling and healthcare.
If I change jobs, what happens to my family’s visas?
Their status follows yours, so cancelling your residence affects every dependant attached to it. Sequence the change so your new residence issues and the dependants transfer without a gap.
Get the order right before you apply
Family sponsorship is not difficult, but it is unforgiving about sequence and documents. Settle three questions early: what salary your registered contract will show, what accommodation you will hold in your own name, and which certificates need attesting while you still have access to the issuing country. Speak to our team before anything is filed.
